Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater
Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater is Chicago's world class Spanish dance company under the dynamic leadership of Founder Dame Libby Komaiko and Artistic Director, Irma Suarez Ruiz and Executive Director, Jorge Perez. The company is the premiere center for Spanish dance/music in residence at a state university, Northeastern Illinois University. Original Spanish classical ballets, folkloric suites, Flamenco dramas and contemporary works from a repertoire of more than 135 choreographies, created especially for the company, are presented along with revivals of international 20th century masterpieces. Ensemble Español honors its fourth decade of performances and residencies in the fields of Spanish dance, music, visual arts, theater, classes, workshops and festivals serving over 26,000 students annually and over 50,000 audience members nation wide.
The company tours throughout the United States, including Puerto Rico and Hawaii, and has performed on four continents in the countries of Mexico, Costa Rica, Poland, Australia, Canada and China.
In honor of their 40th anniversary season the company has been invited to tour Spain in the summer of 2016.
The company consists of 18 professional contracted dancers with a youth program of over 18 student/dancers ages 10 - 22. Three scholarship university endowments have been established with one foundation endowment to support the company's educational outreach program.
