Name: "Welcome to Chechnya" - Beyond the Film
Date: July 16, 2020
Time: 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM CDT
Event Description:

In 2017, Chechnya cracked down on LGBTQI citizens. Hundreds of people were arrested, tortured and interrogated, just because they were LGBTQI. In response, the Russian LGBT Network in partnership with New York and Toronto-based non-profit organization Rainbow Railroad worked quickly and clandestinely to move people out of harm’s way to safer countries in Western Europe and North America.

Now, the remarkable story of the activists who risked everything to get people to safety is being told by filmmaker David France in a new documentary Welcome to Chechnya, due out on June 30 on HBO.

Three years on, in Chechnya, and in over 70 other countries around the world, same-sex intimacy and gender identities are still criminalized. Given the rightward turn in American politics, how do we continue to press for greater equality internationally for LGBTQI people? We’ll address this and many other questions during our discussion.
